Who we are & scope

This Privacy Policy explains how Uttanka ("Uttanka", "we", "us") collects, uses, shares and protects your personal data when you use the Uttanka application, website and related services. For the purposes of applicable law we act as the data controller / data fiduciary / business. This policy applies to users in India, the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, the United States, and worldwide. Last updated 6 July 2026.

Personal data we collect

Identity & contact: your name, email address, an optional phone number, and a securely hashed password. Birth details: your date, time and place of birth and the geographic coordinates of that place — required to compute your chart. Conversation data: the questions you ask and the readings generated for you. Transaction data: the question packs / credits you buy and your payment status (your card, UPI or bank details are handled by our payment processor and are never stored by us). Device & usage data: a randomly-generated device identifier we create for anti-abuse and support, your device type, operating system, app version, language and timezone, an optional push-notification token, and limited diagnostic and usage data. We do NOT collect your precise GPS location.

Sensitive & special-category data

Your date, time and place of birth, and the topics you choose to discuss (which may reveal information about your health, relationships, finances, or beliefs), may be treated as sensitive personal data / special-category data under the GDPR, India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (DPDP Act) and other laws. We process such data only to provide the readings you request, on the basis of your explicit consent, and you may withdraw that consent at any time by deleting your account.

How we use your data & legal bases

We use your data to: compute your charts and generate personalised readings (performance of our contract with you, and your explicit consent for sensitive data); operate, secure, debug and improve the service (our legitimate interests); send notifications you have opted into (your consent); and process your purchases and keep transaction records (performance of contract; legal and tax obligations). Under India's DPDP Act we rely on your consent and certain legitimate uses. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time without affecting processing already carried out.

Intelligence & automated processing

To prepare your reading, your question and the relevant parts of your chart are processed using intelligence tools, including third-party providers (currently Google and Anthropic). We transmit only what is necessary and do not authorise these providers to train their models on your content where an opt-out is available. A practising astrologer then reviews your reading — and may update it where they judge it can be improved — before it reaches you (see “Human review by our astrologers” below). Readings are guidance only; they are not automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. We apply safeguards consistent with Article 22 GDPR where applicable.

Human review by our astrologers

To prepare, check and refine your reading, the birth details and the question you submit may be accessed by practising astrologers who work with us. They review each reading and, where they judge it can be improved, update it before it reaches you. They access only what is needed for that reading, are bound by confidentiality obligations, and may not use your data for any other purpose. This human review is part of how we deliver the service you pay for.

Who we share data with

Service providers (processors) who act only on our instructions: Razorpay (payment processing, on both web and mobile); Google Maps Platform (geocoding the birth place you search); Google and Anthropic (intelligence generation of readings); Expo (push-notification delivery, if you enable it); and our hosting and diagnostics providers. Practising astrologers and reviewers (see above) who help prepare your reading, under confidentiality. We may disclose data to comply with law, enforce our terms, or protect rights and safety, and in connection with a merger or business transfer. We do NOT sell your personal data, and we do not "share" it for cross-context behavioural advertising as defined under US law.

International transfers

We are based in India and your data may be transferred to and processed in other countries, including the United States, where our service providers operate. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK Addendum) and equivalent measures for cross-border transfers.

Data retention

We keep your personal data for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the service. When you delete your account we delete or irreversibly anonymise your personal data within a reasonable period, except where we must retain certain records (for example transaction and tax records) to comply with legal obligations.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS/TLS, passwords are stored only in hashed form, and access is restricted to those who need it to deliver the service. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we maintain reasonable administrative, technical and organisational safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the data.

Other US state-law rights are honoured where applicable.

Children

Uttanka is intended only for users aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected data from a minor without appropriate consent, we will delete it. A parent or guardian who believes a minor has provided us data may contact us to have it removed.

Cookies & analytics

We use limited diagnostic and usage analytics to keep the service reliable and to improve it. We do not use advertising or cross-app tracking SDKs; if this changes, we will update this policy and request your permission before any tracking begins.
