The 12 Houses (Bhavas) of the Birth Chart
If the planets are the actors of a chart and the signs are their costumes, the houses — bhāvas — are the stage. The twelve houses divide your chart into twelve areas of life, from your own body and character to your wealth, family, work, marriage and the things that lie hidden. Learning what each house governs turns a chart from a puzzle into a readable map of where life's themes are likely to play out.
How the houses are set
The twelve houses begin from your ascendant (Lagna): the sign rising at birth becomes the first house, and the rest follow in order around the chart. This is why birth time matters so much — it fixes where house one starts, and every other house with it. Each house has a natural meaning, and the planet that rules its sign, together with any planets sitting inside it, tells the astrologer how that area of life tends to unfold.
The first six houses
The 1st house (tanu) is you — body, health, character and how you meet the world. The 2nd (dhana) is wealth, savings, family and speech. The 3rd (sahaja) is courage, effort, siblings and communication. The 4th (sukha) is home, mother, property and inner peace. The 5th (putra) is children, creativity, intelligence and romance. The 6th (ari) is health and illness, daily work, debts and obstacles overcome. Together these cover the building blocks of a personal life.
The last six houses
The 7th house (yuvati) is marriage, partnership and the spouse — one of the most consulted houses. The 8th (randhra) is transformation, longevity, inheritance and hidden things. The 9th (dharma) is fortune, faith, the father, higher learning and long journeys — a deeply auspicious house. The 10th (karma) is career, status and public life. The 11th (labha) is gains, income, friends and fulfilled wishes. The 12th (vyaya) is loss, expenditure, foreign lands, sleep and spiritual liberation. The last house closes the circle and points beyond it.
Reading houses honestly
Houses are read by their natural meaning, by the strength and friendliness of their ruling planet, and by whatever planets occupy them. The angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) and the trinal houses (1, 5, 9) are considered especially powerful and supportive, while the 6th, 8th and 12th — the dusthānas — handle life's harder matters. But none of this is destiny: a 'difficult' house with a strong, well-placed ruler can work out well, and an easy house can be wasted. The houses tell you where to look; they do not pronounce the ending.
