How Uttanka computes your chart

A chart is only worth as much as the calculation beneath it. So here, plainly, is how Uttanka works — what we measure, with what method, and the principles we hold while reading it back to you. Nothing here is generic horoscope text; every placement you see is real astronomy, derived from the actual sky at the moment you were born.

Real astronomical calculation, not templates

When you enter your date, time and place of birth, Uttanka computes the true positions of the Sun, Moon and the planets in the sky for that exact instant — the same ephemeris mathematics professional astronomers use. We do not pick a paragraph that matches your Sun sign and call it a reading. The signs, houses, nakshatras and period dates you see are each calculated for your moment, down to the degree.

That precision is why birth time matters. The Moon moves about one sign every two-and-a-quarter days and the ascendant (Lagna) shifts roughly every two hours, so an accurate time sharpens the houses and the finer divisional charts. If you do not know your exact time, the chart still computes everything that does not depend on the minute of birth — your Moon sign, nakshatra, planetary positions and daśā timeline remain reliable.

The sidereal zodiac & the Lahiri ayanāṁśa

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — measured against the fixed stars — rather than the tropical zodiac of Western astrology, which is tied to the seasons. Over the centuries the two have drifted apart by about 24 degrees because of the slow wobble of the Earth's axis (the precession of the equinoxes). The correction that bridges them is called the ayanāṁśa.

Uttanka uses the Lahiri (Chitrapakṣa) ayanāṁśa — the standard adopted by the Government of India's Calendar Reform Committee and the convention followed across mainstream Indian jyotiṣa. Choosing a single, well-defined ayanāṁśa is what makes a chart reproducible: cast it here, cast it with any serious Vedic astrologer using Lahiri, and the placements agree.

What the engine produces

From that single moment Uttanka derives a full Vedic reading. Each layer answers a different question:

• Divisional charts (vargas). Beyond the main rāśi chart (D1), we compute the harmonic divisions — the navāṁśa (D9) for marriage and a planet's true strength, the daśāṁśa (D10) for career, and others — each a finer lens on one area of life.
• Vimśottarī daśā. The classical 120-year planetary-period system that maps your chart onto time, computed from your Moon's exact nakshatra down through mahā-, antar- and pratyantar-daśās, so you can see when, not just what.
• Ashtakavarga. A points system (bhinnāṣṭakavarga and sarvāṣṭakavarga) that scores the strength of each sign and planet — a quantitative check on where the chart is genuinely supported.
• KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati). The sub-lord stellar system for sharper, more event-specific timing, built on the same sidereal positions.
• Panchāṅga. The five limbs of the day you were born — tithi, vāra, nakṣatra, yoga and karaṇa — for the ritual and muhūrta context of your birth.
