What is a Moon sign (rāśi)?

Why does Vedic astrology use the Moon sign instead of the Sun sign?
Western astrology leads with the Sun sign, but Vedic (sidereal) astrology leads with the Moon. Because the Moon governs the mind and changes sign every 2¼ days, it gives a far more personal picture than the slow-moving Sun. Do I need my exact birth time to find my Moon sign?
Usually no. The Moon stays in one sign for about 2¼ days, so for most people the Moon sign is reliable from the date alone. The only exception is if you were born within a few hours of the Moon changing signs — in that case an accurate birth time removes any doubt.
